JCR Democracy

The JCR (Junior Common Room) has two meanings: firstly it refers to the overall undergraduate body, represented by an elected committee covering everything from Welfare and Entz (Entertainment), to Academics and Equality and Diversity. The JCR organises social events, supports student welfare, and helps make sure our voices are heard in college decisions.
The JCR is also a physical space: the common room which is available for all undergraduates, located on the ground floor of Tommy White between staircases 3 and 4. Together with the TV room, DVD room, and games room, these rooms are at the heart of undergraduate social space in college.
The JCR holds fornightly meetings where motions brought by can be discussed. After each meeting, the minutes are circulated and each motion is put to a vote. If passed successfully, a motion can provide funding for a play, extend the JCR constitution, donate to a worthwhile cause, or add an important principle to the Standing Policy.
Get Involved
- If the work of the JCR sounds important to you, come along to one of our meetings! Pizza, snacks, and drinks are usually provided by our PRAT reps.
- If there is something in college you are passionate about, draft a motion. Templates for different types of motions are circulated by email before every JCR meeting.
- If you would like to make a greater impact, consider running for election as a JCR Officer. Elections are held every Michaelmas term, and by-elections are held throughout the year for any roles that become vacant.
- If you are looking for a smaller commitment, consider becoming a JCR Rep. Reps are appointed at the first meeting of Hilary term, and every meeting thereafter for roles that remain vacant.
